“After a few minutes, we all gave up the pretense of eating, except for Finn, who never let awkwardness get in the way of something as important as his appetite.”
Widow’s Web by Jennifer Estep
Synopsis: Gin Blanco, the semi-retired assasin formerly known as the Spider, is finally happy. Until a new evil, Salina Dubois, comes into down. Not only is she evil, but she also happens to be Gin’s boyfriend’s ex. After someone comes after crime lord Phillip Kincaid, who has his own history with Owen, Gin is back in the killing game. But this time, she may risk her own heart in the process.
Review: I love the Elemental Assassin series. Estep balances her characters and storyline so well! Gin Blanco is one of my favorite heroines. She is a tough woman, but her softness shines through in the most realistic ways. The way she deals with her lover, Owen, and everyone else she cares about is equal parts rational and emotional. We also saw some cracks in Owen’s perfect facade and more into characters like Eva and Phillip. The most intriguing character in this book was the villain, Salina. She was so easy to hate, yet you couldn’t help but pity her so many times. She almost manipulated me a few times, and it just shows Estep’s talent in developing these personalities.
As usual, the story is weaved flawlessly. I was hooked from the first chapter, wanting to know who was her target, to who this Salina chick was, and why Owen hated Phillip. The plot moves quickly, but not so fast that you get lost. The story is balanced well with violent, thrilling, and bittersweet moments.
I was frustrated with how Gin and Owen treat Eva. They say she is 19 and a college student, but they treat her like a 14 year old girl. She’s an adult! However, I think our reaction to the way they treat her is intentional. I also didn’t like some of the things Owen (SPOILERS AHEAD) accused Gin of. He said she didn’t trust him, but he changed his words and tune more than once, so how can she believe he would do the right thing? I just hope they get back together soon! Again I think the way I felt was Estep’s objective all along, which just makes her an even better author.
All in all, excellent book. I am really happy that these books come out so quickly, and I just can’t wait to find out what happens to Gin next!
