Review: Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews

“Your horse looks pink.”
“If you paste some stars on her butt, you’ll be riding My Little Pony.”
“Bugger off.” I patted the mare’s neck. “Don’t listen to her, Sugar. You are the cutest horsey ever. The correct name for her color is strawberry roan, by the way.”
“Strawberry shortcake, more like it. Does Strawberry Shortcake know you stole her horse? She will be berry, berry angry with you.”

Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews

Synopsis: Andrea Nash has been outed as a beastkin: A child born from a werehyena and a hyenawere.  She lost her job as a knight of the order and had cut herself from her friends and ex-bf, Raphael, the bouda prince.  Now she’s back, and working with her best friend, Kate Daniels, in their own P.I. business.  When shapeshifters wind up dead, Andrea is tasked with the job to find there killers.  Can Andrea handle working with her ex and learn to accept her true self?

Review:  Another slam dunk for the Illona Andrews team!  This series has the highest rating out of all the series I have read, which include my favorites Harry Potter and the Hollows.  Their writing style can be compared to good music:  There is rhythm and cadence to the flow in the writing.  The plot moves at a great pace, not too fast and not too slow.  You don’t have to go back and read details because you misunderstood–That is how talented this husband and wife team are.  There are witty and romantic scenes, but it doesn’t overshadow the dark nature of the book.

This is a spin-off book from the Kate Daniels series, but it felt just like “the next book”, told from the point of Andrea.  And although Andrea and Kate are both killers with a sharp tongue, their thought patterns are very distinct.  Although Kate had a tough childhood, Andrea’s is incomparably rough.  Born out of rape and beaten for years, Andrea has to break down the negative cognitions and face human vulnerability.  Andrea needed to recognize and accept love coming from her friends, her clan, and the Pack.  We were able to feel all the bumps and bruises along the way.

Andrea and Raphael’s relationship was torn apart by both their bullheadedness (although really, more Raphael than Andrea), and Raphael does something completely asshole-like.  But that sets of a chain of events that lead to… well you’ll see ;).  They both learn and grow from their mistakes.

We see our favorite Beast Lord and sword wielding kick-ass heroine, Curran and Kate.  We also see our favorite Pack members, especially Asciano, who is slowly learning that violence is not always fun and games.  We see the return of Roman, who adds an intriguing element to the Andrea and Raphael dynamic.

And, as a bonus, the novella “Magic Gifts” is included in the back!  If you haven’t read Magic Gifts before Gunmental Magic, make sure you go ahead and read that first–it is told from the POV of Kate and is a companion to Andrea’s book.

This book is packed with action, romance, and the traditional wit only characters in the Kate Daniel’s books have.  Anyone who reads UF has read this series and this book.  Anyone who reads novels, period, has to read these books.

Sex: Hot bouda sex, kissing
Violence: Plenty and gory, just like the other KD books.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Series Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Next Book: I don’t think there is a direct sequel in the works for Andrea, however, the 6th Kate Daniels book will be coming out next year!
